Beginner Classes Guide

Start useful, not fashionable

New Wayward Outpost players often open the class menu, see Marine flash, and bounce when the gate reads 1,000 Reputation plus Day 40. That is correct design. Early Eleske is a logistics school: learn roads from Alpha, keep Bravo’s fences alive, heal Incisor victims, and bank Reputation that never decreases. This guide focuses on Medic, Infantry, and Engineer—the triangle that makes public servers playable.

When you are ready for radios and ammo boxes, continue to Support Roles. When Day 40 arrives with enough Reputation, graduate to Marine. Meta context: Class Tier List, roster map: Classes Hub, threats: Infected, first hour: Getting Started.

Medic — best default main

Why beginners love it: the health viral lets you heal yourself with E and allies by clicking them. No other early kit matches that sustain. Long truck rides, Ulcer chip damage, and Incisor knockdowns become recoverable instead of walk-back simulators.

Combat note: Medic brings decent starter firearms but often cannot pick up many special world weapons. That limitation is fine—your job is keeping the special-weapon players alive.

Reputation: healing allies is a steady point faucet. In chaotic lobbies you can out-earn pure kill farmers while being the reason the raid continues.

Habits to build:

  1. Heal before looting shiny crates.
  2. Stand where you can see both the fight and an exit—not inside the Bloater pop zone.
  3. Call out when your viral attention is busy so Engineers do not assume infinite saves.
  4. Learn acid puddle pathing so you are not spending the whole session self-healing Ulcer mistakes.

Medic sits in S-tier on most servers for a reason. Main it until muscle memory for infected tells is automatic.

Infantry — the map teacher

Why beginners need it: Infantry is the honest National Guard rifleman. You learn signage, truck etiquette, emplacement gun locations (Airfield M60 fantasy, crash-site M249 fantasy when available), and how Commons actually move when nobody is babysitting you.

Combat note: you can still contribute into Callouses with M67 grenade tricks or M72 LAW pickups/crafts when recipes allow. You will not outscale Marine’s M91A suite—but you will understand why Marine boats matter once you have walked the painful inland routes.

Reputation: kills plus being present on successful logistics runs. Pair sessions with Medic friends so you are not solo-queue punching Brutes.

Habits to build:

  1. Do not enter vehicles without permission or a destination plan—community etiquette matters.
  2. Follow roads; check signs; drop crates by holding near unload points.
  3. Save explosives for tanks and clumps, not single Commons.
  4. Rotate to Medic when the lobby is all riflemen and zero heals.

Infantry ranks B-tier as a late meta pick and A-tier as a classroom. Use it deliberately.

Engineer — the adult in the room

Why beginners should unlock it early: power outages hit Bravo, Alpha Power Station, and Irueno Sub-Station on timers that ignore your loot greed. Blizzards interfere with radios. Fences decay under pressure. The Engineer toolkit upgrades barricades (Reputation on upgrades), construction with materials pays again, and wrench repairs restore power. Without Engineers, Radioman drops and Marine boats still lose when the lights die.

Combat note: shotgun presence (M1014 fantasy), mines, and wrench melee options cover close defense. You are not the primary Nest DPS—you are why there is a Nest to return to.

Reputation: upgrades and builds are efficient, especially compared to missing shots on Callouses.

Habits to build:

  1. On join, ask “when was the last outage?” and pre-position.
  2. Spend materials on walls that protect unload zones, not vanity mazes.
  3. Duo with Radioman so airdrops refill what you build—see Support Roles.
  4. During sieges, mine chokepoints then fall back to wrench duty instead of ego peeks.

Engineer is S-tier. If your friends only want to shoot, be the wrench—your Reputation and their survival both rise.

Suggested first week plan

Days 28–35 servers: Medic primary, Engineer secondary, Infantry for exploration nights. Read Updates so you know if a shutdown patch changed kits.

Approaching Day 40: keep farming toward Radioman (~mid Reputation investment) and the Marine 1k gate. Do not idle in menus hoping for codes—there are no promo codes to skip the grind.

After Day 40: if Reputation is ready, swap into Marine for Gainsboro; if not, keep Medic/Engineer while you finish the last few hundred points. Crashed Pilot can wait—it is a challenge fantasy, not a beginner pillar.

Squad templates for new groups

  • Three friends: Medic + Engineer + Infantry
  • Four friends: add Radioman as soon as unlocked
  • Five friends: add Support or Marksman; AT only if Brutes are bullying you nightly

Avoid four Marksmen and zero logistics. The Tier List Hub explains why that composition fails.

Mistakes that stall new accounts

  • Ignoring Medic because “healing is boring,” then rage-quitting to scripts on the Scripts Hub (bad idea for bans)
  • Fighting Callouses with rifles only—bring grenades/LAW plans from Infected
  • Building random fences far from Bravo’s actual fight lanes
  • Hoarding Infantry identity after you have unlocked Engineer and Radioman holes in the lobby
  • Entering Hive mist without CBRN prep just because a YouTube thumbnail dared you

Master these three classes and every later unlock feels earned instead of borrowed.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers for Eleske operations.

What is the best beginner class?

Medic. Infinite viral healing for you and teammates teaches fights safely and prints Reputation while keeping squads alive.

When should I play Engineer as a new player?

As soon as you can. Outages and fence upgrades make you valuable every session, even before you know every Irueno loot room.

Is Infantry bad because it is B-tier?

No. B-tier describes late meta power. Infantry is an excellent map teacher and still helps with grenades or LAW answers against tanks.

Can beginners unlock Marine quickly?

Only by earning about 1,000 Reputation and waiting for Day 40. There are no promo codes—Medic/Engineer/Radioman work is the fast fair path.

What should I unlock after the beginner trio?

Radioman for airdrops, then Marine at 1k Reputation on Day 40+. Add Support or Marksman based on your group’s gaps.
