Why this tier list exists

Wayward Outpost is not a simple DPS ladder. On Eleske Island you win by moving materials, calling radioman drops, healing squads through Hive mist, and surviving Callouses that laugh at rifle fire. A class that shreds Commons in open fields can still be B-tier if it cannot repair Bravo fences or resupply a Hellmouth push. This hub explains how we rank kits, then points you to the detailed pages:

Ranking criteria

We score every class and infected type on four axes. When axes conflict, logistics value on populated servers usually wins—because a dead Bravo with empty armament crates ends the raid before individual aim skill matters.

1. Logistics value

Can the kit keep Alpha, Bravo, APS, and forward camps alive? Radiomen who land timed airdrops, Engineers who wrench power outages and upgrade fences, Supports who dump ammo boxes, and Medics who top off viral heals all raise the whole server’s ceiling. Pure shooters without resupply tools drop a tier on long Day 40 sessions.

2. Combat effectiveness

Raw stopping power against Commons, Ulcers, Incisors, Callouses/Brutes, Bloaters, Lurkers, and Screamers. Under-barrel launchers, shotguns in interiors, marksman rifles on approaches, and dedicated AT tools (Gustav / LAW / NATIC) matter more than spray volume. We also weigh how safely a class deletes Bloater worms or acid puddles without wiping the squad.

3. Unlock cost

Reputation never decreases, so every point is permanent progress—but high gates still matter for new accounts. Infantry and Medic come online early; Radioman sits around mid-Reputation; Marine demands 1,000 Reputation plus a server that has reached Day 40. A kit that is strong only after a week of grinding is ranked on both “late power” and “time-to-online.” Crashed Pilot is treated as a challenge unlock tied to the Day 40 C-130 narrative rather than a default meta pick.

4. Day 40 dependency

Servers begin around Day 28. Day 40 flips the island: Greyt Marines arrive via the GRS Gainsboro, the Airfield crash enables Pilot fantasy, and infected pressure near Alpha/APS spikes. Classes that require Day 40 cannot be your day-one plan. Classes that merely benefit from Day 40 weapons or events stay flexible.

Snapshot: class tiers

S-tier (core meta on most servers): Marine, Engineer, Medic, Radioman. These four cover boats and Gainsboro logistics, base integrity, squad sustain, and supply drops. If your public lobby has at least one of each, survival rates jump.

A-tier: Grenadier, Support, CBRN, Delta, Anti-Tank, Marksman. Excellent specialists—swarm clear, ammo spine, Hive mist gear, elite kits, heavy infected deletion, and overwatch. Bring them when the objective matches.

B-tier: Infantry, Cleaner, Automatic Rifleman. Honest workhorses and area tools that still carry early Reputation farms and secondary slots on raids.

C / situational: Crashed Pilot — fun challenge fantasy after Day 40, not the backbone of a serious logistics stack.

Snapshot: infected tiers

Commons are the volume threat; Ulcers punish bad pathing with acid; Incisors create fast knockdowns; Callouses/Brutes demand explosives or AT; Bloaters force worm cleanup; Lurkers and Screamers break formations with ambush and aggro. Counters and priority shooting orders are spelled out on the infected tier page.

How to use these lists in a real session

  1. Before Day 40: stack Medic + Engineer + Infantry/Radioman. Farm Reputation through heals, upgrades, and supply calls—see Beginner Classes and Support Roles.
  2. At Day 40: rotate a Marine onto Gainsboro boats, stock C-cells at the ship requisition machine, and keep Radioman drops feeding Bravo.
  3. Before Hive / Hellmouth: confirm CBRN gear, Medic coverage, Support ammo, and at least one LAW/Gustav/NATIC answer for Brutes.
  4. When the lobby is chaotic: prefer S-tier logistics over stacking three Marksmen. Aim skill does not refill materials crates.

Meta drift and updates

Balance can shift when the experience comes back from hiatus or drops a “Server Shutdown = Update” patch. Revisit the Updates Hub after major builds, then sanity-check whether Marine boats, radioman timers, or infected health changed. Tier letters here reflect the community meta described across class guides: logistics-first, Day 40 aware, and allergic to one-dimensional DPS picks.

Use this hub as the table of contents. Dive into the child pages when you need the full argument for why Radioman sits next to Marine in S-tier, or why a Callous is worth a LAW over another rifle magazine.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers for Eleske operations.

What makes a class S-tier in Wayward Outpost?

S-tier kits combine high logistics value with strong combat or unique map access. Marine, Engineer, Medic, and Radioman cover boats/Gainsboro, repairs, healing, and airdrops on most servers.

Does Reputation ever decrease?

No. Reputation never decreases. High unlock costs still matter because new players must earn points through heals, upgrades, drops, and kills before Day 40 classes open.

Why does Day 40 affect the tier list?

Day 40 unlocks Marine (and Pilot fantasy content), changes infected pressure, and enables Gainsboro logistics. Classes gated behind Day 40 cannot be your opener on a fresh server.

Where are the detailed class and infected rankings?

Open the Class Tier List and Infected Tier List child pages from this hub for per-entry reasoning, counters, and links to player guides.

Should I pick Marksman over Radioman?

Marksman is strong A-tier overwatch, but Radioman’s supply drops usually raise the whole squad more on long logistics nights. Bring Marksman when lanes are clear and ammo is already solved.
